Development of high value added pesticide products from natural minerals and plants
Main Article Content
Abstract
Pest control continues to be an indispensable tool in modern agriculture; however, the intensive use of synthetic pesticides causes increasing problems: the emergence of resistant pests, contamination of surface and groundwater, mortality of fauna, toxicological risks, among others. The objective of this work is to present the results on the development of high value-added products, based on natural mineral wealth (zeolite, lime), industrial residues (sulfur, tobacco dust), and extracts from natural plants, for effective pesticidal action, without generating negative environmental impacts. Clean formulation procedures were used by the mechanochemical method of modifying solids in dry form and by impregnating the minerals with alcoholic plant extracts. The products obtained based on modified zeolite combined with various additives (sulfur, lime, tobacina, neem and melaleuca extracts) proved to be effective in controlling various agricultural pests such as snails, thrips, whiteflies, and aphids, as well as in preventing the African snail and mites. Applications were carried out in cycles of 7-15 days in the presence of pests and 30 days preventively in the early hours or at the end of the day with doses of 150 - 200 g/backpack in the fumigation. It is concluded that the developed products offer a sustainable and effective option by taking advantage of natural resources and industrial waste for pest control and the protection of crops and the environment.
