NICKEL RECOVERY FROM LIQUID RESIDUALS OF THE CARBONATE-AMMONIACAL PROCESS

Abstract

The dumping of industrial liquid waste of nickel metallurgical enterprises in Cuba is a problem of environmental pollution, due mainly to the heavy metals content that are generated in them. Such is the case of liquor residual of the ammonia recovery plant CARON process, represented by the Ernesto Che Guevara Company today. Currently nickel and cobalt content in this residual are precipitated as sulphides, using a solution of ammonium hydrosulfide, whose product is a concentrate of mixed sulphides difficult to handle due to its gelatinous characteristics, besides the drawback increase of sulfur compounds in the treated liquor. This paper offers an alternative to recover nickel and cobalt present in these wastes by sorption and desorption processes in continuous system with the use of Lewattit TP 207chelating ion exchange resin. The extraction of nickel and cobalt achieved during the sorption process were older than 95 and 60% respectively in the conditions. In the desorption process of the loaded resin metals with the use of a solution of sulfuric acid 125 g/L is obtained eluates with nickel concentrations greater than 29 g/L and 0,68g/L of cobalt.
